Hair design (diseño) in New York City

Walking past a barbershop recently in Inwood, Upper Manhattan, I spotted an ad for a contest for “diseño,” the art of clipping and shaving pictures into the beard and head hair of — mostly — Latino guys. The ad showed some of this work: stars, waves, the Statue of Liberty, the president of the Dominican Republic, the Empire State Building (looking rather wiggly where the spire passed over a phrenology bump).

I attended the contest, at the Eclipse Night Club, 207th and Sherman Streets. Check out my pix, including of Leticia, the only woman contestant.
